What would be the most significant thing you could do to improve your health? This is one of the last questions on my new patient intake forms, and do you know what the number one answer to this question has been for over the past 23 years? The answer is likely no surprise, its lose weight.

I’m a Physician and this is my 50 pound weight loss story

I had been struggling with a slow and steady weight gain for about 15 years. The harder I tried to shed the pounds, the more weight I gained. How could that be? If you know me personally or professionally, then you know that I have always eaten a healthy diet, low in complex carbohydrates, free of junk foods (mostly), and that I exercised regularly. I have helped hundreds of people lose weight over the years in my practice teaching them these principles, and I did all the right things and still I could not lose the weight. I knew that altered physiology and an inability to lose weight is the very nature of Metabolic Syndrome, but despite everything I already knew, I just couldn’t get my weight loss jumpstarted.

I had just about given up when I saw my friend Dr. Mayer Eisenstein. He had lost over 100 pounds on a metabolic weight loss program using HCG. He counseled me discreetly. I almost passed on his advice to do this program, but I figured , “what did I have to lose, except the weight?” As I listened to his explanation of how HCG incorporated into this somewhat strict diet plan was going to work…I was secretly wondering if I could handle yet another failure if I didn’t succeed. In the end, the science of it all made sense, and the dietary guidelines, water intake, sleep and supplementation are completely congruent with what I teach my patients every day, so I took the plunge, and began the metabolic weight loss program using HCG.

I lost 50 pounds over the course of about 3 months and went from a size 14 to a size 6. At age 40, I found myself back to the size I was in high school and I did it without any blood, sweat or tears!!! I felt like I had been let out of prison. Finally the image in the mirror matched the image of myself in my head and I finally could stop the obsessing over how my clothes fit.

My patients were so excited to do what I did, that I brought the program to my practice. With the assistance of my nurse practitioner, 6 years later, I am still helping patients lose ½ – 1 pound per day on a slightly altered version of Dr. Simeon’s HCG diet.

Over 60 years later, the HCG Diet is still the most effective weight loss plan out there

In the 1950s, British endocrinologist Albert T.W. Simeons created the hCG diet. The protocol was based on 40 years of obesity research, wherein Simeons posited that injections of the hCG—human chorionic gonadotropin— hormone lessened and often eliminated the uncomfortable byproducts of an extreme low-calorie diet—among them headaches, constant gnawing, fatigue and sarcopenia (muscle diminishment).

More than 60 years later, his 1954 book, “Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity,” is still riding the weight loss wonder wave. Though the exact protocol has been challenged for years, its controversy compounded by the fact that as of December 6, 2011, the FDA prohibited the sale of homeopathic and imitation over-the-counter hCG products marketed for weight loss use, the hCG diet (using compounded hormone HCG) continues to rack up evidence as an “off label” treatment—often where last-chance dieters are concerned. Utilizing hCG in tandem with a restrictive 500-calorie a day diet, proponents report experiencing minimal or no hunger pangs in the first week, and generally a feeling of complete satiation in ensuing weeks.

The pros of the protocol include the opportunity to consume very few calories comfortably and without hunger because the body is supported by the hCG hormone in the bloodstream which takes away appetite. HCG also acts as a catalyst and helps the body to make more hormones. Since hormone deficiency or imbalance is often a reason for weight gain, whether it’s thyroid, or menopause (or andropause—low testosterone), hCG provides help. For me, as a functional medicine practitioner, this has been an extremely helpful tool in assisting my patients who have autoimmune disorders, diabetes and food allergies to alter their diets without experiencing withdrawal, cravings and hunger.

Since the weight loss happens fast (typical is ½-1 pound per day), patients stay motivated to stick to the diet plan.

You’ll Maintain Muscle Mass

Also, HCG keeps you from losing muscle while you diet. By elevating hormone levels in the body, the hCG hormone creates an anabolic state (muscle-building) which counteracts the catabolic state (muscle-breakdown) of most very low calorie diets. There are hormone receptors on muscle fibers that respond to the increased hormone levels in patients taking the hCG hormone. Because of hCG, fat is mobilized and burned for energy, rather than stored, and the metabolism does not slow down as it would with most restricted calorie diets. Additionally, I run body composition tests on all my patients every 2 weeks to ensure that the weight being lost is strictly fat loss. To date, I have only had 3 instances where a patient lost some muscle mass. In two of those instances the patients were exercising vigorously and in the other, the patient was under eating. Those patients were advised and their body composition corrected as a result.

My hCG diet’s 2 phase approach which includes a transitional and maintenance process, and instructions which help my patients maintain their weight loss with reasonable and manageable steps for the long haul. I lost 50 pounds on this diet more than 6 years ago and have maintained with ease.

Cons of the hCG diet, if strictly followed, include Dr. Simeons’ admonition about exercise. He wasn’t in favor of it, probably because of the diminished stored energy due to the calorie restriction. Simply put, you won’t have energy enough to exercise vigorously. During the first phase of the diet, I advise my patients to stay off the treadmill and out of the gym. But, this restriction is only for 30 days, and since you will have anabolic help (muscle building) from the HCG, you have no threat of muscle atrophy during those 30 days.

There is only one more con, in my opinion: if you are a drinker or even just enjoy a weekend glass or two of wine or beer, you’ll have to forego the alcohol during the first phase of the diet. Since a serving of wine or beer is about 100-300 calories, adding it to the diet means sacrificing much-needed foods from the restricted 500-800 daily calories. The good news is research from participants says that they are not compelled to drink while on the hCG diet because hCG works with the hypothalamus gland which controls the emotional eating/drinking part of the brain, along with other aspects. Though, perhaps this would be a con of any diet…have you ever heard of a diet that allows alcohol? Again, this restriction is only strictly encouraged during the first phase and 30 days of the diet. If you think you are unable to go 30 days without a drink, you have bigger problems, and perhaps those should be addressed with professional help.

Metabolic syndrome has been linked to an increased risk for heart attack, stroke and diabetes and of course weight gain.
